No templates, no compromises

Custom Website Development

A website planned and coded for your business alone: original layouts, features that match how you work, and integrations with the tools you already use. You own the code and can extend it without fighting a theme.

What is custom website development?

Custom website development is the process of designing and building a website specifically for one business, without relying on a ready-made theme or template. The layout, components, features and integrations are planned around the organisation’s brand, content and workflows, and the code is written to match, giving full control over design, performance and how the site evolves.

Most low-cost websites start with a purchased theme and replace the demo content. That works until you need something the theme was not designed for: a different page layout, a calculator, a multi-step quote form, or a connection to your CRM. Then you are adding plugins on top of plugins, and the site gets slower and harder to change.

Custom development starts from your requirements instead. We design a component library specific to your brand, write only the code those components need, and build features around your actual process. That might be a product configurator, a dealer locator, a careers portal with application tracking, or a pricing estimator.

Custom does not have to mean starting every line from zero. We use proven foundations such as PHP 8 frameworks or a bare WordPress install, but nothing visual or functional is dictated by a theme. For the language-specific side of this work, see our PHP website development service.

Who chooses a custom website

  • Brands that need to stand apart

Companies in competitive markets where looking like every other theme-based site weakens credibility, and the website needs to reflect a distinct brand identity.

  • Businesses with specific workflows

Organisations whose quoting, booking, dealer or application process does not fit standard plugins and needs logic built for how they actually operate.

  • Companies with existing systems

Teams that need the website connected to a CRM, ERP, inventory system or third-party API, so data flows without manual copying.

  • Sites that have outgrown themes

Businesses whose current theme-based site is slow, plugin-heavy and fragile, and who want a cleaner foundation they can extend for years.

When a theme starts dictating how your business works

Theme-based sites are quick to launch, but they come with assumptions. The header works one way, the service page has a fixed structure, and anything new needs another plugin. Gradually the site collects dozens of plugins, each loading its own scripts and styles. Pages slow down, updates conflict with each other, and simple design changes become expensive because nobody wants to touch the theme’s code.

Our approach is to define what the site must do before choosing how to build it. We document user journeys, required features and integrations, then design components that fit your content exactly. The code is modular, version-controlled in Git and written to clear standards, so another developer could pick it up later. Because only the necessary code is shipped, pages stay light, and future changes are additions to a known structure rather than workarounds.

  • Requirements document covering features, user journeys and integrations
  • Brand-specific design system and reusable component library
  • Custom features coded to your rules, not plugin defaults
  • API integrations with CRM, ERP, payment or messaging tools
  • Git-managed codebase with documentation for future developers

Scope

What’s included

  • Requirements and scoping

A written specification of pages, features, user roles and integrations, so both sides agree on exactly what will be built before development starts.

  • Original UI design

Bespoke layouts and components designed in Figma for your brand, covering desktop and mobile, with interaction states for buttons, forms and menus.

  • Custom functionality

Calculators, configurators, multi-step forms, locators, member areas or any other feature your process needs, coded and tested as part of the site.

  • Third-party integrations

Connections to CRM, ERP, payment gateways, SMS or WhatsApp APIs and email platforms, with error handling and logging for each integration.

  • Performance budget

Page weight and script limits set during design and checked during build, so custom features do not undo the speed advantages of custom code.

  • Full code ownership

You receive the complete source code, database and documentation, with no licence lock-in to a theme vendor or to us.

Process

Our Custom Website Development process

  1. Requirements workshop

We map user journeys, features, data and integrations with your team, and document them in a specification you approve.

  2. Architecture and UX

We choose the technical foundation, plan the data structure and create wireframes for every unique page and feature.

  3. UI design system

We design the visual components and key pages, then refine them with your feedback until they are ready to build.

  4. Iterative development

We build in stages on a staging server, sharing working features for review rather than waiting until everything is finished.

  5. QA, launch and documentation

We test every feature, integration and device combination, launch the site, and hand over the code, credentials and technical documentation.

What you gain

  • A distinct identity

Your website looks and behaves like your brand rather than a recognisable theme used by thousands of other businesses.

  • Fits your process

Features follow your actual business rules, which reduces manual work and the workarounds your sales and operations teams rely on today.

  • Lighter and faster

Without unused theme features and stacked plugins, pages carry only the code they need and stay quick to load.

  • Easier to extend

A documented, modular codebase makes new features predictable to add, whether we build them or another developer does.

FAQs

Custom Website Development FAQs

Still have a question?

Ask us directly — you’ll get a straight answer from the team that does the work.

Is a custom website better than a template website?

A custom website is better when your brand, features or integrations go beyond what a template supports; for a simple brochure site a well-built template can be enough. Custom sites cost more upfront but avoid plugin overload, theme limitations and rework later. We will tell you honestly which option suits your goals and budget.

Can a custom website still use WordPress?

Yes, a custom website can be built on WordPress using a custom theme coded from scratch, rather than a purchased multipurpose theme. This keeps the familiar editing experience while giving full control over design and performance. For projects with complex logic or integrations, we may recommend custom PHP instead.

Who owns the code of a custom website?

You own the code once the project is complete and paid for. We hand over the full source code, database, design files and documentation, along with access to hosting and the Git repository. There are no proprietary licences that tie you to us, so you remain free to work with any developer in future.

How do you price custom website development?

Custom website pricing is based on the specification: number of unique page designs, custom features, integrations and content work. After the requirements workshop we provide an itemised quote, so you can see where effort goes and adjust scope if needed. We do not give fixed prices before understanding the requirements.

Can you integrate my website with our CRM or ERP?

Yes, if your CRM or ERP provides an API or a supported import method, we can connect it to the website. Common examples are sending form leads to a CRM, syncing product or stock data, and triggering WhatsApp or SMS notifications. We review the system’s documentation first and confirm what is possible.
